Capitola History

Originally known as Soquel Landing, the little town of Capitola began. Soquel Landing received its name from a local wharf located at the mouth of Soquel Creek. Built in the 1850’s, this wharf served as an outlet to both lumber and produce grown in the region.

In 1869, Robert K. Taylor, who owned the property in the vicinity of the wharf, came up with an idea he put to fruition to build and develop a seaside resort. He initially leased the area to William J. Vega and the area became Camp Capitola which opened its doors on July 4th, 1874. Robert K. Taylor himself would eventually take over the resorts direction in 1884. Capitola is known today to be the oldest beach town on the entire West Coast.

Following Taylor’s death in 1913, Capitola was inherited by his daughter, Dionne Henderson, who sold it right after World War 1 to Jose R. McLeroy of San Francisco. The sale occurred during the resort’s 45th season in 1919. Trying to appeal to his fellow townsmen of San Francisco, McLeroy decided to renovate and modernize Capitola to draw in more vacationers.

These plans included the reconfiguration of the Esplanade, construction of the Venetian Courts and development of a golf course. He spent his fortune to the point of bankruptcy on his dream of the vacation town of “Capitola-by-the-Sea”. By 1927 overextended and losing his estate to foreclosures, Rispin left Capitola after the start of the great depression never to return.

Capitola’s community of permanent residents stepped forward to guide Capitola in the following decades. The village has become the third city in Santa Cruz County after an incorporation election in January 1949.

Today Capitola has become a popular tourist destination town. The boutique style shops, gourmet restaurants, and sandy beaches make this little original West Coast beach town an ideal family vacation spot.
